Sennett / Sinnott of Normanton, Yorkshire

This is a bit of a test page for me, as I am trying to find ways of publishing family tree charts in visual form.  I guess I shouldn’t have started with one where there are 97 people (including spouses) by the third generation!

Descendants of Joseph Sennett 3 gen

Chart 1: Descendants of Joseph Sennett 3 generation

So,  here is Chart 1 – Descendants of Joseph Sennett (Sinnott) and Julia Ann Ryan Normanton, West Yorkshire (3 generations).  The image looks ridiculously tiny, but I’m pretty sure if you click on it you get a readable image, although you will have to scroll a long way across the page to see them all.

Joseph Sennett and his wife Julia Ann Ryan were the first of my own Sennett ancestors to come to England from the Avoca Valley area of Co Wicklow, Ireland (spelling originally Synnot or Sinnott).  They had been married at Templerainey Chapel near Avoca in 1840 and their first four children were baptised there, however by the time of the 1850 census when they had been in England for only a couple of years, only two of the Irish-born children were still living.  I believe they must have died in Ireland as I can’t find death records in England.  The first child to be born in England was Mary in 1848.   The family lived initially in Whitwood, in a street known as “Irish Row”, and later moved to various addresses in and around Normanton or other Yorkshire mining villages in the area.  Its a big family, with a lot of descendants, so I’ve broken the charts up into smaller family groups, starting with the same first person (Joseph Sennett, born about 1816 in Co Wicklow).

Chart 1b is a bit more manageable than Chart 1 – its the same starting point as chart one, only just the two generations – parents and children(with spouses where known):

The following charts will give another couple of generations of each of the children of Joseph Sennett and Julia Ann (nee Ryan)

DISCLAIMER – these are working documents and may contain errors or omissions – family trees are incredibly difficult to prove without a shadow of a doubt, and particularly where there are lots of people with similar names, or where there are lots of different spellings on various records.  If you find a mistake, or something doesn’t look right, please contact me so we can work on it together to make any corrections.

Descendants of James Sennett b1843 and Ann Kelly

Chart 2a: Descendants of James Sennett b1843 and Ann Kelly

Chart 2a:  Descendants of James Sennett (born 1843) and Ann Kelly -4 generations.  Just to confuse everyone, James remarried after his first wife Ann (the mother of his children) died – to another Ann – Ann Colley. At least three of his daughters emigrated to Illinois, United States, and James followed them after the second Ann died, though he died within a year or two of arriving in Illinois.   One of the daughters married Luke Hosty, and the Hosty family story has been documented very well.

Chart 2b:  Descendants of Julia Ann McGowan nee Sennett (born 1845).  This is a chart I definitely need some help with.   In general I haven’t been following female lines through once the Sennett name disappears, but as this my own family line, it would be nice to have a complete record of all descendants of Joseph and Julia Ann.   Surnames in this branch include McGOWAN and  McMANUS,  and I am sure a lot more people need adding to this tree.  Please get in touch if you can help fill out this chart.

Chart 2c: Another female line:  Mary Sennett born 1848 married Thomas Kaney or Kenny.  Mary was the first of the children born in Whitwood, probably within a year of the family emigrating from Co Wicklow.  I’m a bit unsure how the spelling of the surname carried through to the present day as early records showed Kaney, Keaney, Kenny, etc, but am assuming it stayed as Kenny.  other surnames include CASEY, HENRY, BRODERICK.  This is another tree with lots of gaps that I need help with.

Chart 2d: These are the descendants of Joseph Sennett, born 1850, and his wife Bridget Doyle.   Its getting rather boring repeating “I need help with this tree”.  One of the complications in this line is that two cousins, both Joseph Sennett, and born within a couple of years of each other, married two sisters: Winifred and Hannah Eames.   With birth index records just giving the maiden surname of the mother and not her first name I haven’t been able to conclusively work out which children belong to which family.  At the 1911 Census, Bridget was said to have had fourteen children born alive, of whom 9 were still living at 1911 and 5 had died.   I’ve guessed at two of these (the first two boys, Edward and George) from the place of birth and date of marriage, and the fact that the names were re-used for later born children but there are still two unaccounted for.  Apart from the EAMES connection, other surnames in this line include GILMARTIN, O’SHAUGHNESSY, SIDDALL, MULREADY.  I’ve left in a few living people on the latest generation, which I don’t normally do, but without date or place identification.  If you are (or are related to) one of these, please let me know if you would like your name removed from the chart.

Chart 2e: Descendants of Thomas Sennett (born 1852) and Julia Palmer.   This chart also includes surnames HUTCHINSON and SMITH.   There is still one unidentified child who died before 1911- assumed from the 1911 census record that indicates that Julia had had 9 children born alive, of whom 7 were still living at the time ofthe census.

Chart 2f:  Descendants of John Sinnott born 1854 who married Maria Doyle.  Maria was a widow of Edward DOYLE when she married John, and already had several children, some of whom can be seen living with John and Maria on census records. Maria’s maiden name is unknown.  John and Maria appear to have had two children together, one of whom died in infancy.  The other married McCULLOCH.

Chart 2g:  Descendants of Elizabeth Cairns, nee Sennett, born 1856 and Michael Cairns.

Chart 2g: Descendants of Michael and Elizabeth Cairns nee Sennett b1856

This is another family where the spelling of the surname has changed over various records, being recorded as Kerns, Kearns, Cairns, etc.   Elizabeth caused me a few problems initially when her husband Michael was described as widowed at the time of the 1881 census.  One of his children was living with their grandparents at that time.  However at the next census in 1891 Michael appears again with a wife named Elizabeth, who appeared to be the same person (from age and birthplace).  A bit more detective work suggests that he wasn’t actually a widower at 1881, but that his wife was in hospital (listed as Elizabeth Kerns).  This family is certain to have some missing people.

Chart 2h: Descendants of Francis Sennett b 1858 and Ellen, nee Melia.  I’ve probably already used several different spellings for Ellen’s surname, but that’s because I haven’t found a single consistent way that her family spelled it.  It’s of Irish origins, and is from the same root as O’Malley, Mallia, etc.  Ellen was the only child of Anthony and Ellen, nee Dunn, and her mother died at or soon after childbirth.  Francis also has an interesting story, as his birth was mistakenly registered as female (see one of my previous blog posts).  By the time of the 1911 census, Ellen stated she had given birth to 8 children born alive, of whom 6 were still living.  One of the children who died hasn’t yet been identified in birth records.  This is a big chart with 36 grandchildren known.

Chart 2i: Descendants of Edward Sennett, b 1862 and Sarah nee Colley.   Edward puzzled me for some time as I couldn’t find his death in Yorkshire.  A contact from another family member asking whether Joseph Sennett who died in Northampton could possibly be his son sent me off on another track and I discovered that the family had moved and lived in Woolwich, London.  Other surnames in this line include WOOD.  I still don’t know for sure whether Sarah Colley is related to Ann Colley (who married another brother), but it would seem likely.

Finally, the last of the children is Winifred Sennett, born in 1863 and married Andrew Foy.   This is a family I haven’t researched thoroughly, so only have three children and no grandchildren listed so far.

Whew!  This has been a fairly massive post for my first attempt at publishing family tree charts.  I hope it has all worked, and it would be great to get feedback.  I’ve not put any deliberate restrictions to stop anyone copying them to their computer, so if you want a chart of your family, try a right click and “save as” (they are .jpeg files).
